Safety is a top concern for any pregnant woman. The life you live is now being lived for two. You don’t want to take any unnecessary risks or push yourself too hard, but you also want to make sure to look after yourself.
For a woman who deals with misaligned teeth, you may be wondering if it’s okay to have braces while you’re pregnant.
Allow us to answer.
Braces and Pregnancy
The short answer is yes, you can have braces while pregnant. In fact, since braces take 12-24 months to align your teeth, many adult women choose to overlap the process with their pregnancy.
There are a few things to be aware of, however.
Before beginning treatment with braces or Invisalign, you will receive x-rays to properly diagnose your treatment. While these x-rays are harmless to the patient, x-rays emit small amounts of radiation which can be harmful to unborn babies.
While studies have shown that this is only a risk when an x-ray is targeted at the womb of a mother, some women would rather not take the chance. If you’re currently trying to get pregnant, but you also want braces in the near future, it’s best to get your x-rays done now so that it’s a non-issue.
The body goes through many changes while pregnant, which can have different results from person to person. One occurrence many women experience is gum swelling. While this isn’t a big issue for most, braces can increase this agitation for some.
Since painkillers are largely discouraged for pregnant women, this is something to consider as well.
Appetite Changes and Eating Requirements
One last thing to keep in mind is the changes in appetite that coincide with pregnancy. You may develop an aversion to your favorite dish. Meanwhile, you’ll have cravings for things you’d normally never eat. With braces, there are certain foods that you should avoid.
This shouldn’t be a large issue, but you may find yourself craving something that may be harmful to the brackets.
The Earlier You Start, the Better
If you’re planning on having kids in the near future, but you’d also like to improve your smile and overall mouth health, it’s best to meet with an orthodontist now. That way, you can have x-rays done, learn your options, and plan accordingly.
