How to Overcome Your Fear of the Orthodontist (and Braces)

It doesn’t matter if you’re a kid or an adult, going to the orthodontist probably isn’t something you’re looking forward to doing. You don’t know what they’re going to say. You worry they’ll invade your personal space. You’re unsure of the cost.

Some people are outright afraid of going to an orthodontist.

If you’re one of those people, we have some good news: there’s nothing to worry about. Going to the orthodontist is a simple and breezy process that can be surprisingly relaxing and comfortable. Don’t believe us?

There’s a chance you have the wrong idea of what takes place at the orthodontist office. Let us set the record straight. Here are a few truths about the orthodontist that will (hopefully) help you to overcome your fears.

It’s Not the Dentist

Some people, especially children, don’t always understand the distinction between orthodontist and dentist. Though both work to make your mouth healthier and happier, they’re very different.

The orthodontist focuses specifically on alignment and bite correction through dental equipment such as braces and Invisalign. That means there’s no drilling, pulling, root canals, discovering cavities, etc.

So if you’re one of those people who is afraid of going to the dentist, just remember, the orthodontist is very different.

It Doesn’t Hurt

Dental procedures can be very unpleasant. That’s not a knock against dentists. It’s just the nature of the business. With an orthodontist appointment, however, things are much more pleasant. There’s no pulling, scrapping, drilling, etc.

While your mouth may feel a little sensitive as it adjusts to braces, its not outright pain that you’ll be feeling.

Braces Go Faster Than You Think

If you get braces or Invisalign, you could be wearing them 12 to 24 months. We know, that sounds like a long time. But you’ll be surprised by just how quickly it passes. Especially once you adjust to the braces or Invisalign.

After a month or so, you’ll start to forget they’re even there.

People of All Ages Have Braces

This generally applies more to adults. They worry that braces are childish, and people won’t take them seriously if they have braces. First of all, if someone has a problem with you having braces, that’s their issue, not yours.

Second, you should know that both braces and Invisalign are very common among adults. In fact, they become more common with each year. So don’t worry about your age. Just focus on the goals you have for your teeth.

You’re Going to Love How You Look

Sure, if you have the choice between having braces and not having braces, you’re going to choose not having braces. But let’s be honest, if you had to choose between having radiant, perfectly aligned teeth  and crooked, uncomfortable teeth, you’re going to go with aligned teeth.

Braces and Invisalign are temporary. The great looking teeth you have afterwards will last you the rest of your life.

Trust us, no one looks at their beautiful new smile and says “I wish I would have never gotten braces.” It’s completely worth the wait.
