Toothbrush Maintenance Tips

The toothbrush is the most important tool for keeping your teeth clean. Because your toothbrush takes care of your teeth, it’s important that you take care of your toothbrush. Otherwise, you increase your chances of forming cavities.

And no one wants that.

Here’s some simple advice for making sure your toothbrush stays in prime brushing condition.

Rinse it Out Thoroughly

Virtually everyone rinses their brush out after using it, but many don’t rinse it out long enough. Make sure to rinse thoroughly to remove any remaining particles and toothpaste out. Otherwise, bacteria from your mouth could stay on it.

Let It Breathe

A toothbrush should not be kept in a dark, enclosed space. Moisture breeds bacteria. Keep your brush out in the open and off the counter.

If you don’t already have one, get a toothbrush holder. You need to make sure it dries out in-between uses.

Keep it Away from the Toilet

Because bathrooms tend to be on the smaller side, your toothbrush probably isn’t that far away from a toilet. While you might not have much room to work with, try and keep it as far away from the toilet as possible.

Also, when flushing the toilet, try to put the lid down first. This helps prevent the spread of airborne bacteria.

Replace Your Toothbrush

A toothbrush is something you shouldn’t get too attached to. People tend to go far too long without replacing them. Truth us, you should replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. If the bristles seem particularly frayed, you might want to replace it even sooner.

As the brush gets worn down, it loses its effectiveness, leaving more bacteria in your mouth.

If necessary, set a recurring reminder on your phone for when it’s time to replace your toothbrush. You’ll be glad you did.

A Toothbrush Isn’t Enough

While brushing your teeth is the first line of defense when it comes to keeping your mouth healthy, it’s not enough. Make sure you’re also rinsing and flossing daily and seeing a dentist twice a year. If you have alignment issues, you’ll need to see an orthodontist.
