Winter has officially arrived in Minnesota. With the excitement of the holidays behind us, now is about the time everyone starts looking forward to their spring break plans. As Minnesotans, we have to take any opportunity we can get to leave the subzero temperatures and get some much needed vitamin D!
What do your spring break plans look like?
There is a lot of planning that goes into traveling. Whether you are on your own or bringing along the whole family, chances are you have a whole list of ways you need to prepare before you can take off. Cleaning your home, doing laundry, finishing up work, packing, the list goes on.
If you are traveling with braces or Invisalign this spring break, you may need to add a few more items to your list before you set out for rest and relaxation.
We have put together a few important reminders for traveling with braces or Invisalign that will ensure you have an amazing vacation without having to stress over your teeth.
Scheduling appointments around vacation
When planning a vacation, be sure to check when your next scheduled orthodontist appointment is. If you realize you’re going to be gone for your next scheduled appointment, give us a call, and we would be happy to move your appointment to either before or after your vacation.
We suggest fitting an appointment in before vacation to help ensure no orthodontic complication during your trip.
Put together an oral hygiene kit
Just as you pack all your other necessities for a trip, don’t forget anything you may need for oral hygiene. We suggest packing floss and a travel toothbrush to keep up on your daily cleaning. Bringing a water bottle to be sure your rinsing your mouth isn’t a bad idea either. Orthodontic wax, a small mirror, and toothpicks are all helpful things to pack in your vacation oral hygiene kit.
Watch what you eat
We all know vacation is a wonderful time to treat yourself, but use caution when indulging in different foods on vacation. Even though you’re on vacation, there are still some foods that could be harmful to your braces or teeth.
Keep away from gummy candy, hard nuts, corn on the cob or whole apples, and any foods that are especially chewy or hard. The good news is, there are still plenty of yummy treats you can enjoy on vacation that will cause no harm to your braces.
Keeping your aligners in
If you have Invisalign, you may have a little more flexibility during meal time, but you still need to keep your aligner trays in at least 20 hours a day. When your aligners are in, you shouldn’t be consuming anything besides water.
This means you may have to schedule out when you’re sipping coffee at a cozy cafe or enjoying a daiquiri by the beach.
Keep our number handy
In case of emergency, it is a good idea to give us a call. We can walk you through temporary solutions over the phone and schedule an appointment upon your return.
If you follow these few tips on traveling with braces and Invisalign the chances on an orthodontic emergency are slim. As an orthodontist near Burnsville, MN we know how important it is for you to be able to enjoy your sunny vacation days!
