While Invisalign is an option for people of all ages, it’s especially popular among adults looking to straighten out their teeth. Some, especially those who work in a professional setting, may worry that traditional braces will appear too juvenile.
Though we believe it’s perfectly acceptable for adults to have traditional bracket braces, we understand the appeal of Invisalign’s clear aligners. In addition to being less noticeable, they can also be removed as needed.
So, is Invisalign right for you? The best way to figure that out is to schedule a consultation with an orthodontist. If you’re considering Invisalign in the Prior Lake area, click here to get started.
For those who’d like to know more about the Invisalign experience, we’ve put together a brief summery of what it’s like to have Invisalign as an adult.
Keeping Your Trays In
As we said before, one of the big perks of Invisalign is that you can remove them yourself at any time. That means you don’t have to avoid certain foods like you do with traditional braces. But you need to be intentional about when you take them off and how long you keep them off.
You should be wearing your aligners 20-22 hours a day. Not wearing them enough can slow down the alignment process.
Sipping and Snacking
Though it’s important to keep your aligners on as much as possible, it’s also important to remove them when you’re consuming anything besides water. Dark liquids can stain the trays. Sugar and food particles can get trapped inside the aligners, causing build up and decay.
Because your meal times are more structured, some people may find themselves losing a little weight after getting Invisalign.
Improved Teeth Care
Most people end up taking better care of their teeth when they have Invisalign. Part of this is because you should be brushing and/or rinsing your teeth after consuming food or drink. This keeps your trays clean and your teeth protected.
When you reach the end of your Invisalign treatment, your teeth will likely be healthier than they’ve ever been.
People Won’t Notice
It never ceases to amaze our patients how undetectable Invisalign really is. You’ll have face to face conversations with people, and they will have no idea you’re wearing something over your teeth. Even if they know the trays are there, they can be hard to spot.
Though some may take a few days to adjust to the presence of trays in their mouth, most adapt immediately. You’ll forget they’re even there. Those who are used to sipping on coffee or soda and snacking throughout the day will need to be more intentional with when they consume food and beverage.
Soon, however, it becomes second nature.
Lastly, some may find they have a minor lisp as their mouth adjusts to the aligner trays. This is something you’ll notice more than anyone else, and it too shall pass quickly.
If you’re still unsure about Invisalign, there are alternative options such as Damon Clear that provide a more subtle braces solution as well. Once again, the best way to learn your options is to sit down with a professional orthodontist.
